Make a Shortcut!
It is important to make a home-screen shortcut for the app the first time you open it. This is especially the case for iPhone users. Without a shortcut it is very difficult to get back into the app after you close it.
Access the menu bar in the top left hand corner. At the bottom of the menu you'll find the 'Add Shortcut' button. Click and follow your phones options to add to your home-screen.
Access the menu bar
Access the Logbook
To log a procedure, click the menu icon at the top left. Select ‘Log a Procedure’ and complete the form that appears.
Online Training Modules
Before you can log a procedure you need to complete the respective online training for arterial lines, central lines and patient transport. Make sure you log the module using the App. You will be given instant access to log procedures.
Getting Accredited
To obtain accreditation in a procedure at the John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit, a combination of tasks must be completed in order.
- Online Theory
Before you can log a procedure you need to complete the respective online training for arterial lines, central lines and patient transport. Make sure you log the module using the App. You will be given instant access to log procedures.
- Completion of Logbook
There are two recognised levels of supervision recognised in the logbook. Each procedure requires a different number of each to be completed.
Hands on Supervision: your supervisor is by the bedside with you the whole time and may be scrubbed for procedures
Close Supervision: your supervisor is aware you are doing the procedure/transport and will check in with you and review your performance
- Final Direct Observation of Procedures (DOPS)
This can only be attempted once the required number of supervised procedures have been logged. You are to print out the appropriate DOPS form and present it to your supervisor before starting the procedure. If deemed successful the DOPS will be forwarded to the credentialing team and you will be notified once accreditation is confirmed.

Recognition of Prior Accreditation
For those who have prior experience at a procedure you will only need to perform one of that procedure under close supervision (supervisor present but not scrubbed). This will allow you to be accredited at the JHH.
Log this procedure with *Close Supervision (I have prior accreditation) selected as the level, and leave a short note in the comments about where you got prior accreditation.
You will be exempt from the corresponding online module.
To be credentialled in the John Hunter ICU you will need to complete the corresponding DOPS with a supervisor and this will be reviewed by the credentialing team.
If you have old logs that you want to keep track of digitally feel free to transfer them to the app. Use “Alex Priori” as the supervisor (no signature required), and leave a note in the comments about where it was done. You can change the date to more closely represent when it was done.
Troubleshooting the ICU App
Refresh button
Although the app should automatically refresh in the background, sometimes it doesn’t. Many issues can be solved by hitting the manual refresh button in the top right of the home page:
Add a Shortcut
To add a shortcut to your phone’s homepage there’s a button at the bottom of the menu bar.
My app won't refresh
This is a common problem, especially if you've used the app on a previous rotation and are a returning user. If the app has been updated in the meantime from the back-end, your version on your phone may not be in sync. You will run into trouble when trying to log new procedures and the app is forced to keep new entries on your phone's memory. Then you can't refresh the app because you're storing these entries! Very annoying but there's a simple fix and you shouldn't lose your new log entries.
1. open the menu bar in the upper left corner
2. click 'show changes'
3. there should be an option to email the document named queued local changes - send them to robert.d.tamblyn@gmail.com
4. once you've sent the email, go back to the menu bar and select 'reset changes'
5. update the app by clicking the refresh button in the top right corner
Once you've done this I will update your logbook from the back-end.
